WORSHIP @ NORTHMINSTER

The Worship of God is the central act of Northminster Baptist Church. Rooted in our Baptist principles, the Northminster congregation seeks to make God the object and purpose of our worship. All our other activities, Sunday School, Bible studies, fellowship gatherings, are adjunct to corporate worship as it sustains us in our daily work and witness.

Northminster’s services represent the “Charleston tradition” of Baptist worship, which Baptist historian H. Leon McBeth characterizes as “a more formal style of preaching and worship” and is the most historic style of worship among Baptists in the South. As Baptists, we practice believers’ baptism, allow for a time of response following the sermon, and sing hymns familiar to our faith.

But as Christians united in the wider Christian fellowship, we utilize the Common Lectionary for Scripture readings and observe the major Christian holy days and seasons such as Advent, Christmas, Ash Wednesday, Lent, Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter, Pentecost and Trinity Sunday, as do other Christians around the globe.

We use traditional symbols, paraments, colors, ceremonies and litanies to reenact the story of God’s redemption through Christ Jesus. In essence, we are Baptists worshiping in the liturgical tradition.
